CITY SEMINARY

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
- Matthew 28:19-20

City Seminary exists to equip disciples of Jesus to know, obey, and convey all that Christ commanded.

Our aim is to help you think biblically, grow spiritually, and mature missionally.

We do this by combining:

  1. Robust teaching that fosters theological depth,
  2. Vigorous discussion that engenders spiritual formation
  3. Key projects that strengthen application.

We aim for whole-person discipleship that forms head, heart, and hands into the likeness of Christ.

Theological Depth + Spiritual Formation = theological formation for everyone.

The Gospel

The gospel of Jesus Christ is as big as the cosmos and as small as you and me. It is both simple and complex. This course will expose you to the depth, breadth, and diversity of the gospel. In addition, it will help you identify false gospels which threaten true joy. Through lecture, study, discussion, the key project, and the Spirit’s power, you will arrive at a gospel simplicity on the other side of complexity, stirred to give your life to the good news.

The Gospel

The Bible

No other book has so radically transformed the lives and hearts of women, men, and children quite like the Bible.

Christians are happily people of the Word. And yet, crucial questions remain: What is the Bible? How should we approach it? How do we read it well? How do we speak of the Bible’s goodness in a world that’s hostile to it at worst and indifferent at best? This book will help participants better grasp what the Bible is, how to approach it, and how to cultivate a joyful life of being shaped by God’s Word.

Devotion

Every single person—religious or otherwise—has been formed and is being formed. The question is by whom and for what?

The Christian life is a gift of reformation and transformation as God’s grace and goodness form us to live the fullest life with Him. God works his formation in us through the ordinary but transformational practice of the spiritual disciplines—practices that root his grace deep in us to shape us from the inside out. This book provides an overview and guide of the common and central means of grace that form Christ in the people of God.

Mission

God’s mission is the greatest cause on earth. It changes people, communities, cultures, cities, and populates eternity. But how should God’s mission shape our lives? This book explains how we can join the mission of God in everyday evangelism, community life, and urgent prayer.

WorldView

The story we believe about our identity, our world, and our purpose–our worldview–fundamentally changes our lives.

The way we view the world shapes how we live in the world. If we believe the world is limited to what we can see, we will treat it one way. But if we believe there is more to the world than we can see, we will live another way. Our worldview shapes our identity and purpose in life. As we develop a biblical worldview, we can cultivate a life that enables us to flourish, bless others, and more fully glorify God. This is the gift of a worldview. This book will help readers develop a Christian worldview that orients their lives and hearts toward flourshing in the true story of reality.

Doctrine

Christian doctrine fuels our delight in God. It does so by clarifying who God is and what he is up to with the world.

Doctrine is for life. Doctrine is for everyday living. If it’s dry or dusty, then we aren’t doing it right. Christian doctrine is divinely inspired, potent revelation for faith and practice. Ultimately, good doctrine fuels worship. To live a doctrinal life is to live close to God, and to live close to God is to be truly human.

The Church

The Church is the life work of Jesus Christ. Scripture describes the church as a bride, house, flock, temple, and body. But what do these metaphors mean? What is the Church? This course will plunge you into a rich, multifaceted understanding of the church. We will also wrestle with objections to church like church hurt and leadership scandals. Through lecture, study, discussion, the key project, and the Spirit’s power, you enter a deeper understanding of what it means to be God’s people.
